Well, it may be, tho' as far as torches are concerned, smaller seems to be better - make of that what you will!
I have an expensive torch because during the winter months, I have to take the dogs up onto the common after dark pretty much every day, and it really is dark up there. On its dimmest setting, the Fenix will give me plenty of light to walk by, and its batteries will last for ever. But if one of the dogs takes off after a fox or badger or some other creature, I can switch to the brightest setting, which will melt your eyeballs ... and I can spot them a mile away.
So that's my excuse... (OK - AND it is indeed an incredibly tactile, sleek, sexy little gadget!!!)
I bought a £10 maglite (the ones roughly the size of a pen) as I had one as a kid but seem to remember it being much brighter.
I cannot emphasise how great the wind-up torches are that are in Wilkinsons at the moment though. I bought myself one of the larger black/silver ones last year and it's really bright. Then this year they have newer smaller ones in that you don't even wind up, you just pump it a few times in your hand. At 2.99 they're a bargain and my girlfriend was thrilled with it =D

Maglites can be improved by retrofitting modern led bulbs. However the best torch for daily use I've come across is the Fenix L2D. Twisting the end cap prevents accidentally switching on. Uses the latest LED's available. Comes with spare rubber seals and runs on 2 AA batteries. I bought the optional diffuser so doubles up as a lantern in the tent.

Forget maglite. The best affordable torch on the market in my opinion is the
FENIX.
There are hand held torches on the market that cost £3500.00 each
I have the Fenix p3d. This gives ot 215 lumens on max setting awsome power for a light that fits in your pocket. Mine also doubles up as a lantern when you fit a diffuser on (£1.95). Comes with a belt holster and lanyard strap.
I also have the Fenix 2pd. This is tiny but still gives out 180 lumens.

As some of the older members will know, i collect LED torches and have spent £100's+ of pounds on them. I have about 50+. One of the best i have is a maglight with a drop in module made by>>Inretech<< It is very bright indeed. The downside is the weight as in all maglights.The adapter module itself consists of aluminum(?) heatsink which is screwed into the flashlight's bulb socket, circuit board on top of it and of course the LEDs. As you could guess by the name, trilight uses three 1W Luxeon Star LEDs. So, what you get is a powerful and durable light, yet very economical. I also like Led Lenser for cost and quality. I have so many Led torches its unreal I have a few halogen torches too. You cant beat the latest LED ones though for pure white light and burn time..LUXEON K2 tffc LED's in torches are the bizz, there are some other LED's made by other company's
i bought 6 fag lighters with blue LED's in the end from poundland,it makes you jump having a fag in the dark if it comes on
not bad for a quid the six so i bought 24 ,we dont have poundland where we are and came across one at folkestone ,we visited 4 times
