I made my own unit, I has full ELCB/RCD protection and 10Amp MCB protection in a small housing (IP 65) made by VOLEX I run 4 x13A sockets again IP65 rating and I have 30mtrs of blue artic grade flex feeding it.
Thats interesting, where do you get the IP56 13A sockets so cheap ?
Cheapest I have seen is around £25 for a double, if your entire EHU cost £40, the IP56 13A sockets must have cost only about £3 or £4 each.
Incidently, did you really mean IP65 13A sockets, most of the ones I have seen are IP56 ?
you can add me to the "where did you get the sockets from?" list, I've got the cabling already made up and just need the RCD socket and I'm nosing round for the best price at the moment, I've been put onto a company by a mate and I'm going round to see how much they want but if I can get it cheaper elsewhere then I'm going elsewhere
You can get IP65 rated gear, take a look on the screwfix site but for a serious outdoor socket I think it needs to be IP56, I'm not an electrician but if you read the info on the site it all becomes clear.
Yes I meant IP55, and Screwfix direct is my main supplier I use the Clipsal twin gang (x2) which are OK. The MK ones are very expensive, but' as you probably know much better for outside use. Under canvas the Clipsal ones are fine.
I get VAT back so that makes it cheaper for me. I notice that they are now £12 each! The consumer unit I used is the Volex Garage one complete with RCD and MCB's for about £24 at todays prices. When I made mine up a couple of seasons ago things were cheaper!
Sorry for the confusion But I still recon I saved a few quid and it's custom made for me and our tent. having the RCD in seperate housing makes things easier to organise.
That's the trick then. For the rest of us who don't get that 15%-ish discount, buying the ready made ones work out so close to the price of the components that its just not worth the hassle. (Or risk for the inexperienced.)
i bought an electric hook up from towsure ....just a single socket....but it only has an IP of 44....is this ok as a few people have mentioned it should be an IP of aleast 55

Thanks for the info.

Well most of us cant do that legally, since you cant claim the VAT back unless the purchase was for use by a business. I have a VAT registerd business but I am very careful that I dont reclaim the VAT on private purchases.
could you provide details or instructions on how to make an electic hook up so we can get an electrician friend to make it up
Certainly.
You need an "industrial style" IP44 plug and 16A "exterior grade" cable. The orange stuff which is rated down to freezing point ish is fine.
Then you need an IP55 enclosure which must enclose a 30mA RCD, 16A circuit breaker and IP55 protected sockets.
My personal experience of pricing up the components to make this lot is that it's cheaper to buy the ready-built version - but your friend may have better sources.
