Personally, I would advise paying a bit more and get some with sub-channels which would provide more privacy.
I use PMR446 radios regularly on car rallies to communicate between cars with hands free kit. Without subs, one can pick up other people's conversations, as discovered by those who have radios that do not have subs.
Those without subs are adequate if one does not mind the lack of privacy.
It depends on what you want them for. If it only to keep in touch with the kids on site, does it really matter that others hear you calling yours back for tea?
its not that its the constant voices or "ring tones" you get when using them as they only have 8 channels ,we plumped for 6 mile versions with the extra channels now they only make a noise (we use them at car boots) when we want them to.we found the range in the cheap ones fell off very fast and even a small hill or group of trees made them not work ,of course the range is in "best" conditions (probably an airfield) when they write up the specs ,in real life even the more powerful imports fall short
We took ours camping too! Kids had a great time with them We also took 2 cars and on way home had a good giggle with the OH who had one in the other car and also knew where each other were in the traffic if we lost site of each other, certainly made the journey more fun
