I have found that giving the poles a slight twist before pulling them out of the ground helps. We have a horizontal strip cotton type material with wooden poles that have the metal tip on them.It also has a bead that can fit in the awning rail. Had it a few years now and it's still looking good.

We have had and got rid of loads, then just brought another one couple of weeks ago!! Lol

The modern ones are small and easy to pack, but don't stay up, need guy ropes.

The old fashioned ones are probably better, but can need a fair bit of hammering to get in to the ground, with some sore finger/swearing results (well it does when my OH does it, lol )

Used broom stales from hardware shops and a piece of tarpaulin in the same colour as the Pathfinder, green.Made it a six-pole type [as that was how many stales I got.] and just sewed 2inch hems in the tarp. With broom handles there is a bit of room at the top where I could put a tempory guy line if needed.  It stayed up all fortnight and still looked like new a year later.

wooden poles everytime, modern ones kept falling over to many guy ropes (and cost me almost £30!). BM have two sizes at the mo' from £4.99. old stripey ones.
