we use a baby gaz heater it eats the cartridges but we have scores ,if it got really cold we have one that directly fits on a calor bottle but it would have to be cold to fire that up it gets mighty warm.
there's "suitcase" versions now on mainstream sale ,not tried them but the carts seem expensive at over a quid each
theres also old versions that use a hose on your gas regulator but whatever it is gas is far more expensive to use than electric on a EHU .
over the years we've had tilly heaters ,they stank and condensation was a problem but they did get warm and slightly cheaper then than gas ,not now paraffin is a fiver a gallon though
Just buy an EHU camping lead and a mini electric radiator. At this time of year (especially with a bad chest!) you need to keep warm. Chest infection + cold and damp air = chronic bronchitus or worse - believe me, I know!
You can leave an oil filled rad on all night on low to keep you nice and cosy. I quite often have to get up and turn mine off!! I'm in a pop top caravan, the top half is canvas!
The gas heaters probably cost as much if not more than paying for EHU anyway. Mind you, if you're camping somewhere without access to EHU then you're stuck! Personally if that was the case, I just wouldn't go.
EHU in the winter is really the only safe way to go, IMHO.
I must admit, for the really cold months I prefer EHU heater than the gas.It is safer to use espeacialy when taken into the bedroom pod when settling down for the night.
When I camped in March, It was bitterly cold plus it did snow which pleased our DS, but it was a toss up between EHU+a potential mudbath or NON EHU + a better pitch by the stream, but further away from the facilities. I did choose non ehu, better pitch but a pain having to walk while its raining to wash the dishes and take the dog for a walk. This meant having to constantly dry the outer clothing. Thankfully they had somewhere, where I could this. Would I do that again, I don't now? I did enjoy being by the stream, DS was able skim the stones, fab views, it was great when the sun was out, very enoyable listening to the rain.
It just depends what the pitches are like for me. for comfort and hassle free EHU.
Well we did it! Just back from 3 nights without EHU. The first night was freezing!! There was ice on the inside and outside of our tent but we were all fine as long as you didn't stick any part of body outside the covers! The next 2 nights I was actually too warm! LOL
Saying that if I camp early or late again I would probably go ehu for lighting!!

no heating Heather!! It was fine! I think it was fairly mild apart from the first night! We didn't want to risk the gas and I didn't have time to get EHU set up! Really enjoyed it didn't even leave the campsite!

Thats great you had a fab time, sooo much that you stayed put. If I had younger children. I definetly would not risk it with using the gas heater.
I do prefer the EHU and use a fan heater, mine just heats the tent up just fine. In the Summer it's not really needed but I use mine to recharge batteries. but from time to time I do use the gas heater. but very vigilent, also make sure DS is nowhere near it.
My next trip will be Easter as i did'nt go this term very sad in deedy
