I think they're referring to the fact that propane is stored at higher pressure in the cylinder, so if the cylinder fails, you'll have a bigger mess to deal with!
Of course, this doesn't happen as Calor would be being sued left, right and centre if it did.
As for storing the cylinders, butane can be stored inside but propane has to be stored outside (again due to the higher cylinder pressure). The sun shining directly onto a cylinder won't harm it. The cylinders are stored outside in full sun at the depots, so there's nothing to worry about there.
Scifipaul..I wouldn't let yourself get bogged down over points like which burns hotter,lasts longer,costs less per kg(..or explodes the easiest!) etc..because as has been said,they are both pretty equal...
Personally,I'd opt for Propane(it's what we use)but as you're tenting,you may not be out camping when the temp' is that low anyway..in which case I'd probably just be checking out the local tip/bootsales/freecycle and just see which ever cylinder crops up...
