I have an outwell one, but will happily change to the cheaper stripey ones as think they are more sturdy and less likely to bend or blow over in my Scottish climate.

We have one with guys:
Pros - small and light to pack
Cons - lots of faffing with guys - things to trip on and easily blown over

We have a cheap striped beach one on wooden poles:
Pros - easy to put up, stable enough to hang things from to dry off
Cons - bigger to pack, clashes with tent (although I am personally not bothered by this)

Why we take one at all:
To boil the kettle mainly
Provide a bit of privacy
To keep rain from blowing in - it goes round our table which usually has shoes etc under it so helps protect them from the elements

If you've got a B & M near you they have super, old fashioned, stripey ones that are really great and VERY cheap. We wouldn't be without ours.

Thanks for this, I just went out and bought one

Just noticed it seems to have a split pole but otherwise seems sturdy enough. They also had a 5 pole, 3m long for £8.99

I suppose it depends on the circumstances you would use one as to whether or not it would be essential. When I was with my ex we always used to put one round the front of the tt so the dogs could wander about off lead without escaping, but since I've been camping on my own I've never bothered with one and never felt one was essential until I was away in May. The kids belonging to the family camping across from me were riding their bikes and scooters close to my brand new awning, even though they had all the field to play in - my previous awning had been damaged by kids on two separate occasions and I wasn't having anything happen to my new one so I went to the local shop and got a 15 pole 26ft windbreak which protected the front and exposed side of the awning. I think the family got the message as their kids didn't come near after that - and if they thought I was being antisocial then tough, that was their problem not mine!
