We had one of the cheap corkscrew things for our Golden Retriever but we rarely used it. He never moved from our side, wasn't interested in other dogs or kids. Of course when we were cooking or busy around the tent and our eye wasn't on him we did secure him. For us camping was something we could do with our dog and our camping trips were geared around being suitable for him, that's why it's taken us so long to get back into it.
I wouldnt even consider going camping without my dogs they absolutely love it.
Im quite lucky as our camping is at dog agility shows and everyone builds a garden using barrier fencing so dont have to put them on a stake.
