Illogical to make the cups for hot drinks, when hot water cannot be poured into them.
I pour the milk before hot water. I wonder if that makes a difference.

Its well known that melamine cracks if you pour boiling water into them. It has always been the case. It depends how you make your drinks. Teabag and boiling water=crack. Coffee and water well off the boil should be ok as should tea poured from a teapot.
We switched to stainless steel cups, plates, bowls etc., a couple of years ago. Not cheap but we will never need to replace them. We bought Tatonka everything as we liked the sizes/finish, they are great generally but the cups were only single walled. We then found some very cheap double walled cups which are fantastic.
Surely everybody knows that the optimum temperature for brewing tea leaves is 84.6C? Any hotter and the leaves fail to infuse - rather they just 'fuse'! Apparently, 3000 different chemical reactions occur when water at the correct temperature is added to tea leaves and allowed to 'stand'. This is what allows the tea to acquire its unique flavour according to its type. Too often nowadays, most of us are guilty of throwing in the water as soon as it has boiled and squeezing the 'bag in order to get the colour out and 'bag out of the cup as soon as possible. Tea making is an art and we should make time to ensure that each cup is prepared to its potential.
That said, I hope that the O.P's husband is ok, having been scolded with boiling water. We, too, have melamine cups but I do not recall receiving any warning notice with them re: hot liquids. Therein lies another problem...... what exactly would a manufacturer mean by the term 'hot'; or 'boiling' for that matter.
1st - never make tea with boiling water. It scalds the leaves and makes it bitter.
2nd - use GO aluminium mugs wih silicone liners. Cool to the touch, but retain heat, so nice hot tea for longer.
