Yep, spiritburner, you are correct I guess, my Bialladin 300X must be brighter than a 150watt light bulb, maybe it’s my eyes that are getting dim, also I never did a side by side test between my bulkhead lantern and the Bialladin 300X.
To be fair, I would not take my Bialladin 300X camping, it’s more of a museum piece in this modern age, modern alternatives are arguably better and safer to use.
But that does not take away the the character of these old and new pressure lamps, and nothing quite gives the same Glow, and probably never will.
Yep, spiritburner burner, I do miss the flare up’s, but since I perfected my technique they don’t happen anymore, but what a great learning curve for newbies !
I've got the Olight H2R Nova neutral white (look for the NW prefix)
It's got several brightness levels starting with night mode, which is really dim for when you get up for a wee. It comes with an optional head strap but the base is strongly magnetic. The battery lasts ages on low mode, you don't need medium or high very often (high is ridiculous, think of 500w security light)
Bit expensive but will last a lifetime, the battery is an 18650 so can easily be replaced when the time comes.
Hiya - I thought I'd answer as used to suffer the same issue and had photophobia and could barely manage any glare so know how debilitating this can be. I didn't however, have an issue with this particular lamp -
To be honest, it's an amazing lamp regardless and well worth the money, good batteries can last for weeks and it has three dimmer settings. I hung it up high in the centre and it gave good light all round without any glare at all that bothered my eyes - somehow it diffused the light in a way that helped and not into my eyes. Was no good if not up high though and too bright if on the table fr example. I don't particularly understand how it lit the area directly below it but hey ho! You can hang it up by either end and I remember one end worked a little better for my eyes than the other but can't remember which exactly but neither end caused many problems. it is extremely heavy though so no good for light weight camping. I used it along with these:
which can be easily directed to anything and towards smaller areas such as onto the stove without it going into my eyes and had no issues with these - if not in my face.
Failing that, could you not use the kind of coloured thin plastic/ cellophane I remember using in crafts at school to put in to change the colour? that would be easy to do on the Varta one as you can get inside.
On a side note just in case it helps, it was because my pupils were not dilating properly and it was resolved a few years later and was because I was lacking in a certain hormone but also deficient in a few things albeit hard to determine which one exactly as treated for so many at the time and could have been a few different ones but definitely had something to do with B12, maybe some of the other B vits and folate as definitately mproved with those but I was also treated heavily for Vit D and iron and magnesium too alongside increasing most of my nutritional levels. I can now sit in the office and walk outside able to look up without getting a blinding headache and eye weirdness/pain so worth a try and maybe a few blood tests etc.
Unfortunately during this time, I also suffered a hell of a lot of UV damage inside my eyes which is permanent so do wear those sunglasses.

------------- Wynnster Eagle 6 tent also but never used as too big for most sites we've been too and were too happy with our other tent.
Plus a SunnCamp Breton 500 Deluxe for shorter camping trips which we bought at the end of 2019 but have yet to use it due to lockdown!
I found to "lanterns" on wayfair, have tested them out and they work. They are those lanterns that also have a fake flame inside - which we won't be using. I tried them in dark in the living room - you can put them on the flame (a bit cheesy but funny), bright orange light or dimmer orange light (the latter is better for me).
I think unless you suffer from the "glare impact" you probably don't get it. But like I say, I'm the person who wears sunglasses even on grey days.
Again, thank you everyone!!!!!
