Thanks for all the advice, we didn't see the Sharp ones but found a Panasonic Inverter which is a decent size but 30% smaller than comparable ones and does everything.  It has lots of pre sets and autos etc so should be just the job.  It is an NNA554W model if anybody is interested.

We have had a spending spree today, also got an ultima 260 porch awning and a double mattress memory foam topper.  Better go do some work to pay for it all.  Only kidding, but blimey it was an expensive day.
