I always find it odd that people will quite happily leave stuff out unattended on a campsite, stuff that they probably wouldn't dream about leaving out on their own front lawn at home?!?... (..MHs out for the day, leaving ehu leads/steps/chairs etc )
We've only ever had a large brolly and a 6mtr fibreglass flagpole & flag go missing but as I posted earlier,we always locked our "stuff" together...
With the amount of things just left out,it is quite surprising that more stuff doesn't go walkies really..
Being a fairly newbie to Camping... we have been quite lucky with site security...
We usually take our Laptop and will start to take our tv and digi box...
These will be left in the tent whilst we are there and the boot of the car at night...
Never experienced any thefts as yet and hopefully wont ever do, we usually stay at sites we know and dont do the festivals etc... I mean my god we are 30 now!! hee hee
I have not yet experienced any theft on campsites. That said, I don't leave anything of value laying around when I leave my pitch.
However, I've heard plenty of stories of thefts from tents at music festivals.
Where it is possible to do so, valuables should be locked in the car (out-of-sight prefereably) especially at festivals - there's no point in making theft easy.
Sadly, any activity - even camping - will be plagued by a tiny minority of anti-social and criminal participants so a little commonsense caution is advisable.

If a fellow camper is desperate enough to risk his self respect, his reputation or me thumping him then he is welcome to whatever he wants.
Yeah but don't forget...
A) They may not be a "fellow camper",they could be just walking through the site, having a nose..
B) If they are a thieving scumbag, then the won't give a jot about self respect or reputaion anyway(..in fact in the circles in which they probably move, nicking stuff would probably raise his/her reputation!),
C) They'll nick stuff when you're not about,so you'll be unable to give 'em a good thumpin'!
I understand the "..we've camped for years and never had a problem.." approach,(it's what I thought prior to us having a few items "walk")..but I've never had my car nicked or house broken into either but that doesn't stop me from still locking them...
