You can get lots of walkie talkie phone apps nowadays, we have Walkietooth for Android which as the name suggests works between phones using bluetooth, no phone signal or internet required. One of the handsets is the base and the others connect to it. Handy but of course limited by the distance between phones, much the same as walkie talkies.
Hello
Yes Zello is one of those apps I use
Not just for the walkie talkie features using phones.
But can use tablets/pcs too with microphone and radio gateways using the pc software,so all devices can be interactive.
Biggest problem I find even now,you cannot solely rely on GSM phone signals in some places,so I tend to use both two way radio pmr446/CB and Zello app where GSM signals ok.
P channels fixed preset TSQ channels in the EU band.
Ctcss DCS tone squelch mute for quieter independent channels in your group
NRC DSP noise reduction built in
Thanks for taking the time to post all this detailed information. Way back in 2008, the OP said “Am after some of these so can keep in touch with kids on the beach.” I can’t even understand the specs for these 2-way radios! Just shows how a post evolves over time.
Pretty easy once get head wrapped around it
CB on 27mhz multi-norms (change the bands used in each country from the set)so can use in UK and Europe ,can use them in USA now as they use FM mode.
Longer ranges in the open suits cars, vans etc
Pmr446 16 channels ,0.5 uhf low power ,better Comms in built up areas but shorter ranges in hilly areas Vs CB
