I'm looking to free up some space in my trailer and hit on the idea of attaching some kind of small cargo nets to the outside which could hold things like the water carrier. Has anyone else done this or is there a custom made thing that can be purchased?

Not sure how well cargo nets would travel. Have you thought of putting an extended lid on your trailer instead. I built a plywood lid about 30cm deep which sits on top of the trailer and adds about 40% more space inside. It is fitted with hasps and padlocks so I can also use it for secure storage while we are on site.

I'd agree that extended sides are the better way to go.
I riveted steel angle pieces to each corner of the trailer and fixed plywood to these. I attached some hooks to the wooden sides to attach the standard cover to.
