I know that many things can determine how good a signal you get for your telly when camping, but I'd like to know whether it it worthwhile buying a specific aerial? We have a portable digital TV and would like to know if it is worth going for expensive aerials or not? Or is it more about getting it on a very long pole and near a transmitter!! I would be grateful for people's advice.
I think its more of the latter I'm afraid. You can have the best piece of kit available but if your nearest trasmitter is blocked by a hill or cliff etc then you dont stand a chance. I note that you say your tv is digital, reception can still be poor at the best of times and I dont think that will change much until they drop the analogue signal and boost the digital a little.

With an ordinary ariel height is a factor, if you can get a good long pole it helps, also, signals broadcast from a transmitter are sent out in curved waves, i.e. if you point the ariel directly at the transmitter you will get a weak signal, it has to be pointed slightly away, look for a building nearby and note the direction that their ariel points, if you get a snowy picture a set top signal booster can help
We have a tv monitor and take our free view box and up until we went to longleat we got a fairly good reception wherever we seemed to go.But they cant get freeview there and the weekend we went the old man wanted to watch a footie game.We have a status ariel but because we only take a monitor it was no good.We could not even play a dvd. So on our return home we installed an ariel on a pole which can be easily attached and de attatched in minutes. But not content with this my OH has gone one further and put together a sky dish on a try pod so we should be able to get something at least.We have tried them all out and are pleased with what we got,but it does also depend on where you are and what signals you can pick up.
