I know this topic has probably been done to death, but all I am looking for is a pair of decent sleeping bags that can be zipped together with each other form a double. I did like the look of the Vango Nitestar 300, but have been told that these cannot be zipped together because of the hood on the top.

We always had the type that you could join together until......last year...............

Decided, (foolishly as it turns out), to do an 'upgrade' on our 20 odd year old sleeping bags, (ultra lightweight thin jobbies called MOONBAGS which were very warm and had some heat reflective material in the construction somewhere), and gawd knows why, we went for those Mummy types.....well I do know why actually....I liked the flowers on 'emThat'll teach me!

We'd only bothered updating the old ones because our son and his then fiance, (now wife of 3 weeks), where spending a week with us in our tin tent in Cornwall and hubby and I were going to use the two singles up front to save bothering making up the large double each night, having got used to the fact that we could leave the rear double made up allllllll the time and just shut the door across.

But BOY what a wrong move those Mummy types turned out to be. Both of us found them w-a-y too constricting and in fact my hubby ended up just laying on the bed with his sleeping bag opened down as far as it would go with it over the top of him! I suffered on and kept getting inside mine, but never slept very comfy for the whole week tbh. You can actually join the Mummy types together but it means that you have the zip bit right down the middle between you, which can be a bit of a chilly shock if you roll onto it during the night if you'relike us and only wear a smile to bed

Oh how I wish I'd stuck with the bog standard rectangular join together ones now.....I'd seen some rather nice stripey ones on a website somewhere but blowed if I can remember what it was called, sorry. I'll do a liccle bit of a search though in a mo and see if I can find it for ya. Those Mummy types just don't have enough room to move your legs about and as I'm prone to cramp.........well, you can imagine how uncomfortable it was.

I've just had a rare lightbulb moment and remembered where I'd intended to get those nice stripey rectangular ones from....don't get excited.......they might not be warm enough for use under canvas, (mine were only needed for in the tin tent or at a push the awning annexe and they'd have a fleecy throw over them in the annexe anyhoo), coz they were from Argos.

I can't remember the exact price but I do know that they were doing a special offer for a reduced price if you bought two and I was going to get the pink stripey one and the blue.

I'd defo take the advice from cliff 'n' pat though and if they're the ones you want......just make sure you have got a right sided zip and a left sided one and you'll be set. Just don't roll onto the cold zip in the nuddy though

We have some of the Vango ones and yup make sure you get a right zipped one and left zipped ones and then there is no problem, they are fantastic for in a tent but we discovered were toooooooooo warm for our caravan so we bought some standard rectangular ones from the caravan show at the NEC and got a good deal on them.

Thanks to the people who have replied. Looks like I can go with the Vango Nitestar 300. I just thought I would ask as Outdoor Action said this in response to my question about zipping two of the Nitestars together,

"Due to these bags having hoods on them they cant be zipped together we
do sell dedicated double bags from wynnster which still have a hood."

Hippy chick, I couldn't agree with you more about the mummy bags, this is reason why I liked the look of the Nitestar 300's as they are rectangular.

We still have a air of bags from Argos, about 10 years ago, Zoe, our dog has recently claimed one of them as it fell off our bed one night, we used it as an extra downy cos I am always so flipping cold these days. We were only saying last night we would hve to get a couple of new ones, had a look through the Argos cat and there are a couple in there that are envelope style with all round zips, in theory they should zip together but until we see them and try it I wouldn't swear to it. There are also several double ones but these are too big for a standard washing machine and with a grand lack of laundarettes it would mean specialist cleaning and they are not cheap or 'We don't do Duvets!' As once heard on the telly! lol

Re the Mummy bags, a pain in the bagside is the best description!!! IMHO

We have also got 2 Vango sleeping bags.  I'm pretty sure they are the nitestar ones but can't put my hands on them to check at the mo (red & black).  Anyway they are the square bottomed sort.  One left hand and one right hand zip, both with hoods and yes they can be zipped together.

I have to admit though, we've had them a couple of years now and it was only on our most recent trip that I (by luck) managed to zip them together so both hoods were side by side - how dim am I!!

We zip two square nitestars together.  You keep the bags in their own shape so each still has its own hood and the foot part zipped.  The side zips runs up the front and back in the middle of the bed/bag if you get what I mean.  You need a right and a left. I was worried about lying on the zip in the middle, thought it might be uncomfortable but it is not a problem.  We use a sleeping bag liner as well.

We got our two singles from Argos that zip together to make a double.
