Just a quick thanks to the member who mentioned getting a Gas container from your local Tip, we did just that and got two for £5 one was partially full!
I have already been rewarded with an competition win from the Evening Standard
just had a phone call saying ive won a camping survival kit! (though i wanted to win the glastonbury tickets, ho hum)
You're lucky! I visited my local tip where they had loads of 907s stacked up and asked if I could have/buy one. The way they looked at me I thought I was some kind of criminal! I was told they would never sell old cylinders, which were the property of "the company". I left with my tail between my legs!
Our local tip won't accept any gas cylinders at all. Being the kind soul that I am, I was able to help a disappointed gentlemen in front of me last week when he was told that he couldn't dispose of the Calor cylinder in his boot.
Many a time ive been there to drop stuff off and seen something perfectly servicable.
I have asked if i may take it (as years ago it wasnt a problem) only to be told that as soon as it leaves the vehicle of the person bringing it it is the companies property and if i took it it would be classed as theft. Ive offered to pay for items and even suggested they have a charity box for donations but it all falls on deaf ears.
It makes me soo mad, especialy when there are groups like freecycle running and the members are doing there best to keep things out of landfill...
They do vary, even between staff sometimes. I just go in with a friendly smile and prepared for a no. It`s not a big deal. Our very large tip likes getting rid of stuff to the punters though and you often see a neat stack of gardening tools for example with a ticket saying "Only one per customer!!"
Gas bottles are normally kept in locked cages on our local tips however and if the staff are busy, they`re going to be unwilling to walk the length of the site just to unlock it. choose your moment. I go in and out the dump a lot, so I usually only ask when I spot a bottle in the overflow section that hasn`t been locked up yet. "Help yourself to the lot!" is the normal response. I don`t keep all the bottles I pick up, of course, though I will use the gas before I pass it on to my camping pals.
New tip opening up next month near here. I wonder if the staff will be stricter?
