Hi im looking into lanterns and would like the one that runs off a gas bottle, however i have 6 month old twins so i was wondering do they throw off alot of heat and can you hang them from the tent?
Cheers Roz

I would not use these personally around young children as they get extremely hot. We used rechargeable lanterns and glow sticks (in an old baby's bottle) for night lights for the children when they were young. We had a camping gas lantern also for "cosy drinkies" after the children went to bed and they do give off a little heat as a bonus.
If you have electric hook up there are various items on the market like fluorescent lights, bulk head lights etc..
Gas lanterns are fairly heavy - even the ones that run off canisters rather than proper bottles; I wouldn't try hanging it from the roof of a synthetice tent. Although if you have a frame tent then the poles should take the weight.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
We have the camping gaz lanterns that run off a cannister and we have always hung them from the tent , bearing in mind that this was a frame tent. We now have a vario 900 (tunnel tent),and we have hung it from the roof in there with no problems.Only thing is my partner seems to head butt it every time he moves around!!!He forgets it's there!! : )
I may be getting my knickers in a twist for the wrong reasons here, and I don't wish to be a scare monger (perhaps someone can either correct me or confirm this), but I was under the impression that burning gas butane/propane mix gives off a lot of CO2 and should not be used in enclosed spaces.
I would therefore steer clear of any gas appliances in the tent at night , especially with young children.
We only use batteries in the tent or Cyalume sticks as a night light.

If you tent is well ventilated then you should not have a problem however of course you could always purchase one of those carbon monoxide testers to be on the ultra safe side.. I use the camping gaz lantern with gas cannister in my tent which I hang to the celing loop with an old boot lace to give it a good bit of distance from the top of the tent as they do give off some heat. In my experience they give off far better light than any battery lantern.
Hi, I think then it would be safer to stay away from then inside the tent and whilst the kiccy winks are about. What are the sticks people talk about? Are they any good and how long do they last?
Thanks for all the replies Roz
