Just for my peace of mind I am trying to find out if it safe to run a gas fridge/cooler in a tent with a SIG and what I should watch for. I was a little concerned about gas burning in a tent, it just doesn't feel right but I believe that it can be done with some of these gas coolers.
Any advise on what is the best thing to do would be greatly recieved also if anyone knows of a good 3 way cooler I was thinking of something around the 40 litres plus mark.
Hi Warwick Gates, would run a 3 way combo fridge on 240v in the tent but wouldn't on gas. With a SIG and synthetic tent problem could be build up of Carbon Monoxide in the tent. If running on gas would need plenty of ventiliation I would think. The Waeco is a great fridge and can be got for around the £150 - £160 mark. I am sure someone who uses one of these will be along shortly to help better answer your question.
Thanks for helping - I was sure that it was probably not a good idea for safety reasons but have been getting mixed feedback and wanted to be sure before I spent out on cooler. Our problem is that we tend to go for pitches without a hook up and as we are going to be in Newquay for 10 days I was hoping I could find a solution to keeping the beers cold (oh and all the food stuff) without having to change ice packs everyday
We have used our 3 way fridge on gas in the tent several times (it actually works better on gas than on electricity for some reason). Admittedly we dont have SIG but as long as you keep a vent open I don't envisage any problem with CO buildup. It's surprising how little gas they actually use.
Having tried ice boxes and thermo-electric coolers I would never be without the 3 way fridge - it even makes ice cubes for the gin & tonic !
Thanks - Have you got a recommended model so that I can start the job of trying to find the best deal on one? As I have no idea which sort to buy and what to expect to pay but I am sure they will not be cheap.
There are various models on the market (we got ours at an Auchan Hypermarket in France) - most of them are around £150 - £180.
Most of the ones I've seen are "chest" type (ie the top opens like a lid) the only problem with this is that water tends to accumulate in the bottom and makes things soggy ! For this reason I would go for an "upright" one if you can find one.
