I just got a Coleman Duel Fuel 2 ring cooker and I've been fiddling around with it.
The instructions say to give it 35 pumps, light it, and then pump some more. About how much more pumping is needed for a good solid cook-up? Anyone know?
Varies as to how much petrol you have in it, how long your'e cooking for whether you've got both rings on and how high you have it burning. Make sure you have the lighting lever up to light then turn down after a minute. It's easy to just check every so often just pull out the pump valve and give it as many pumps as will go in easily.
That should be about right although it assumes a full tank of petrol. Ensure you are full, then pump 35-40 times. Try and remember the pressure/reistance that you feel when it is done, that is what you are aiming for so, if you are ony half full it may take 50 pumps etc. For a single meal I doubt you will have to pump whilst cooking, I have done cooked breakfast for about 12 with no probs. If you find that the flames are just not as hot )or go yellow) then simply pump a bit more until it's sorted.
If you get yellow flames that blacken your pan it's likely that you haven't got enough pressure. Turn it off, pump a bit more and cross you fingers (I ususally just pump more with it lit but not sure you are supposed to)
I still find it a bit fiddly to be honest but once it's going, it out cooks any gas machine you wil find :-) My only prolem is my wife doesn't like the idea of the petrol so I end up doing most of the cooking.
Griffin, I struggle to pump the dual burner as my girlie hands aren't big enough to hold onto it all but I find the single burner really easy to use so we take both so that if I want to make coffee etc when OH isn't around I just use the little one.
OH superheats ours now and again and bangs it back into shape as it will bend if you have a lot of weight on it with quite a narrow bottom (like a coffee pot)

As a small aside - is it normal that I can get the metal grid that the pans sit on to glow orange when on full heat?
I've decided to call mine Helen.
