3rd kid, swapped Rav for Renault Grand Scenic, roof box and trailer STILL not big enough, I guess the more space you have the more you will take.
The cost of a tow bar will undoubtedly be cheaper than purchasing a roof box and bars, feet alone from Halfords can cost over £100, altogether I think we spent about £450 for roof box, bars and feet, I know you can get it cheaper but if you have a trailer already thats what I would go for...........then get a roof box as well
we managed for two years with a ford escort and a roof box then came the vauxhall zafira last year-cavernous we thought.went to lytham early in the year and just managed to get it all in,went back 3 weeks later for the hawaiian meet and borrowed a trailer from over the road to take all the scenery and when we got back he pounced on us and sort of talked us into buying the trailer off him.we managed to fit the roof box to the zafira to go to newquay in wales for the week and found out that we dont need the trailer, will try to break the news to our neighbour without falling out with him.it was a godsend at the time as we would not have managed to get the surfboard and palm tree to lytham otherwise, but we prefer the roof box as you dont have to worry about all that wagging its tail behind you at speed ! each to their own though ,the more space you have the more rubbish you take with you.
Citroen xsara, three kids and a roof box you can just grt it all in but its a sqeeze,
when we first got the car we were wondering the same as you so we done a sort of dummy run, packed the tent & equipment, holals that we usually use for clothes stuffed with rags to get an idea, measuerd what woulnd go into the car and found it would fit into a roof box just!
but as i said its a tight fit.

I'd be interested to learn the effect on fuel economy. The roof box will increase wind resistance, whereas the trailer will increase friction. I suspect the roofbox will have a greater effect than a trailer on fuel consumption, but am happy to stand corrected if someone has more info. A large roofbox is likely to cost as much as a trailer in any case and you get a lot more for your money with a trailer. (Running gear alone if bought separately is likely to cost as much as the complete trailer.)
Roof boxes are extortionately priced considering the materials and labour required o produce them.
You could try your local freecycle for a roofbox. I had a roofbox on top of my trailer tent which I managed to scrounge from a car that was going to be scrapped. It had the advantage of still being lower than the car, so wind resistance was negligable.
