Following some posts on the forum we bought some campbeds today, the folding type, in order to use with our airbed, to raise us of the ground.
Trying it though, we've discovered that as both beds dip towards the middle, and raise on the edges, the double airbed riases significantly in the centre, and drops as it moves away from the centre, leaving us feeling rather precarious.
Is this just the campbeds we have chosen, would we have needed a deeper airbed - or do you have any other suggestions.
We had similar thoughts about being off the ground, so originally we were thinking of camp beds and airbed. We settled on Fat Airics on top of camp beds instead and it is very comfortable. Friends do the same but with Outwell Deluxe self inflators instead of Fat Airics.
If you really prefer the airbed you could always try two singles - maybe coleman comforts. I could never get on with an airbed and always found them too cold and can say without a doubt you don't get cold on the Airic.
We use two camp beds pushed together, an Outwell self inflating mat on each (that levels the distance between bed frame and the canvas), a light double duvet on top of those, an elasticated sheet to keep that lot down and a heavy duvet (plus blankets if needed) on top. I always wear thermal leggings and a long-sleeved thermal top as well and never been cold in three years of camping.
We too tried the inflatable beds including one of those highrise jobbies but I was forever cold and fed up of waking up nearer the floor than when I went to sleep. The final straw was when we woke up on the floor one morning after the damn thing had sprung a leak on a seam and fully deflated during the night.
In the spirit of useing what we have lying around, I put two sleeping mats (the old foam-rubber sorts) on each campbed, and then the air mattress, and the bumps seem to be taken care of.
Not the best for packing, but they slide folded down the side of our trailer, so not to big a problem.
