Hi Samcat

I'd recommend a good base layer t-shirt or vest rather than blankets. Much smaller, and easy to wear when it starts getting nippy and perfect when you want to stay warm in your sleeping bag too. Layers are the key to keeping warm - and a nice big fire or BBQ. Helly Hansen are great but other companies are catching up...

I love fleecy blankets as they are fairly versitile.

I have used them inside the sleeping bag when it has been really chilly - yet they are easy to whip out if you get too warm.   On top of the sleeping bag as an extra layer - again easy to remove if need be.   
Also used them as a wrap when sitting outside/inside the tent, just for a bit of extra warmth.

wearing vesties is essential.

if i couldn't take my duvet i wouldn't camp but i also take loads of fleeces in the form of coats, jumpers and blankets from 'mr cheap'.
