I recently enquired about buying a groundsheet protector and was told that a breathable one is best because not all campsites allow non breathable types as the grass can suffer.

My tent has a SIG and I would only want the protector groundsheet to cover the footprint of the tent. Surely then it is no differnt from the SIG and I assume it would be allowed at any site.

Is this correct.

Regards

Given that you have a SIG there is little point putting a breathable groundsheet underneath it.

Whether individual campsites allow non breathable groundsheets and/or SIGs is down to them entirely.

Currently the no non-breathable groundsheets tends mainly to be applied to awnings where it is possible to change groundsheets and lift them during the day. However with the increasing number of large SIG tents I wonder if more campsite owners might start to make regulations to avoid damage to their grass.

We have never been asked not to put down our footprint ground sheet on any site we have camped on but when camping in Wales this summer we were told if we were there longer than 9 nights we would have to move our tent to a different part of the pitch to give the grass a chance to recover. Difficult if you have a tent the size of our Hartford.
