Just bought a wind up lantern from Woolies 1/2 price, now £15.00. Seems quite good so far. It has a 3 or 9 LEDs or flashing Beacon as well as a "siren" (Alarm and flashing light!. It also has a radio and mosquito repeller (Not tried yet but makes a buzzing sound!) You can also recharge mobile phones and AAA batteries and also has the ability to plug your ipod in and play through it's speaker.
The winder seems quite sturdy and it's claimed to ba able to give 50mins on full Led for 3 mins winding. Havn't tested how long you actually get yet, but for £15.00 seems ok (Particuarly as I always forget to take a radio whenwe go camping!).
It might need the batteries to power the radio. I only say this because I bought a little cheapy 3 LED torch from Wilkinsons and it'll run the torch fine after two mins of winding but the second you switch it to the radio function it dies almost immediately! Still great bit of kit though - particularly the number of times the kids left the previous battery operated torch on!
> Not sure why it says you need 3 batteries though? <
Not necessary for the LED's, so probabaly to be able to operate some other 4,5V equipment. 2 batteries would result in only 3V, or actually less with rechargeables.
Now that I think of it, my LED Headlamp also has 3 batteries. Maybe it provides brighter light.
I received a wind up lantern for Crimbo - it's ace (Its from Boots) (easily pleased - me) 5 LEDs and a convex mirror top. Really bright, lasts for hours after a couple of minutes winding. Made from rubberised plastic so I reckon it'll bounce if necc.
