hiya all,we`er thinking of going without ehu for the 1st time this year and a decent light for inside the tent is our only stumbling block at the momment.we`ve looked at the various gas and petrol lanterns and they look just the job.but, throw our 3 and 5 year old nutcase boys and both our tents having sig in to the equasion and the safty aspect of them comes to mind.any advise would be appreciated...cheers
With the age of the boys give the petrol and gas lamps a miss unless you are there 100% of the time.
I have a Coleman petrol and another that's paraffin powered and they are great but not for kids.
Modern battery powered LED or fluorescent would be a far wiser choice.
Afraid I agree with the other posters. Small boys, in my experience, are all trainee arsonists - well mine was anyway, and still fiddles with things now at age 14. Electric lantern definitely safer, especially in a tent. I've used paraffin and gas lamps in caravan awnings, but wouldn't use them in a modern synthetic tent, and definately not with kids about.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
I agree with the above on safety grounds given the whirlwind of a 5 year old that we have. It's a shame cos I remember camping with my grand parents and it was a big treat to be able to pump up the tilly lamp at night. Spose it was a simple pleasure for a simple mind
I use liquid fueled stoves and lighting now, paraffin based.
2 years ago I began explaining the equipment to my then 8 & 4 year old kids. Showed them how it works, explained the dangers, let my 8 y.o. have a try at lighting a Primus stove etc.
They both paid attention, now understand not to mess about near the stove or lantern and the eldest is keen on continuing to learn to use the stove.
This year they'll both be given supervised opportunities to use the gear.
If we don't teach em, who else will, and if they don't understand the dangers how can they be expected to avoid accidents?
Each to their own, however, and you'll do what you believe to be best, rightly so.
Just don't underestimate the kids.
Mine continue to amaze me!

Best of luck with whatever you decide.
Well I Take your point on teaching and educating children and I find giving responsibility always worked well, all my children were taught how to use and work this equipment outside a tent first and even myself as an adult hesitate to use petrol or parrafin lighting /cooking stoves inside a tent. Carbon Monoxide in a non breathable tent being one reason let alone fire risk
