Do not know how many coals but we used wilkinson briquettes which are very small compared with leading brand ones, We had water in the moat (did not want to sacrifice any of my beer lol), and put enough briquettes in the basket to fill it to just under the top of it - eg not piled up high but under the height of the wire basket. Cooked our boneless leg of lamb with fresh garlic and it was really nice, but in the morning when we went to clean the cobb out we noticed the cracks/distortion. Do not know if the distortion caused the cracks or the other way round but we have cooked this way 3 or 4 times before with no problems. Our cobb is only a few months old so maybe i will phone the supplier and tell them of my problem. I will keep you all posted on the response we recieve....
We used ours over the mayday b/h and discovered that the moat leaks as we were to cook some baby charlottes in stock which drained out the bottom of the cobb. We don't use the moat much so it no big problem but obviously the heat from the fire has affected the welding somewhere inside.
Can you explaine some more. You mean the metal moat as in where round the sids of the brick basket?
Its leaking out of the moat area ie if you put liquid in it runs out of the bottom of the Cobb. I think the leak is where the inner ash tray is joined (welded) to the moat bowl. I guess the heat has caused expansion/contraction of the metal and created a split or hole.
Our cobb makes a lot of clicking noises from the bottom of the moat...we never use more than 9 beats...we just put the clicks and stuff down to it expanding as it gets hot...and our moat doesn't leak....we have had our cobb for nearly four years now...and have used it a hell of a lot in that time

Phoned supplier today and they asked for photos of cracks for them to see the problem themselves. I have emailed the pictures to them. I await their response and i will post it on this thread.
Well, its good news for me and other cobb users. The cobb suppliers have replaced the cracked component free of charge without me having to put up a fight! Very rare and excellent after sales service from the cobb people! If you are worried about the quality and after sales service you may get from these guys then worry no more - it seems if it breaks in its guarantee period you get treated really nicely and quickly too - my new part arrived at my works address a few days after i contacted cobb uk --- Well done guys and top marks from me for customer care -- keep up the great service
That is good news. I also had cause to speak to Cobb recently not for any fault i may add but was impressed by the attitude of the person who answered the 'phone. Something that has occured to me as a new user of the Cobb is that the moat does get extremly hot. With that in mind i would not want to dunk it in cold water whilst it was still hot for washing as this could cause warping. Just a thought.
