We will going away for the 2nd time this year and will be taking some relations who will be sleeping in the annex in the awning. They have suggested taking their electic blanket.
Hmmmm! Difficult one this. I have heard of people doing this, but not so sure myself.
Have you got an external supply of electricity? If not, how will you get an extension lead plugged into the caravan?
Personally, I would go down the road of making sure whatever beds they were sleeping on had a decent mattress, covered with either a fleece or opened sleeping bags, sheets and topped off with a decent duvet.
First the safety aspect. You'd have to be pretty confident in both your own electrics and these of the campsite to consider sleeping in contact an electric appliance (which is not rated for outdoor use) on the groundsheet of a tented area...which will almost certainly be damp from condensation. Very confident. Are you? And the campsite?
I personally think it's a somewhat foolhardy idea, but there are a few brave souls around who do use them in caravans, TT's and FC. Things with mattresses. Not airbeds. But....using an electric heating blanket will have one other effect on an airbed. Hot air expands, remember?
Tell them to bring lots of warm jammies and bedsocks plus LOTS of bedding. . And a couple of hot water bottles.
Sod it - I'm going to give it a go. We can put the air bed on the SI mattresses to insulate airbed from the ground, old duvet and blankets on air bed, leccy blanket then a sheet then sleeping bag. If the air bed explodes, it explodes (makes for a more exciting trip). I can't see damp being a problem - they are designed to cope with incontinence so a bit of condensation can't be any worse! I'll report back after Easter.
Electricity near water can be a life changing experience. i'd say not worth it. HERE is ian interesting data sheet from the Fire service. Apparently there are 5000 of these things going up in smoke each year.
