One of my biggest fears about switching from conventional charcoal bbq to the Cobb is the additional cleaning, especially the moat. After practicing at home for the last 4 meals, I would like to share with all Cobb users a painless, quick, and effective method to tackle this 'dreadful chore', in case you haven't found one yet. My way is not only economical, it also saves the extra hassle of lugging the lid to the washing-up sink.
This would be my method at the campsite:
1) after cooking, remove grill, put some water in moat if there isn't any, replace lid so that heat from remaining charcoal can loosen dirt.
2) after meal, remove fire basket, then remove the moat and get rid of the ash and liquid
3) using 1 Bounty quality paper towel, first wipe off any residual fat from the lid interior if needed, follow by wiping of any loosen residual fat from the moat(not fire chamber)
4) spray white vinegar inside the lid and the moat(not fire chamber), concentrating on areas with stubborn baked on grease. You shouldn't need too much product.
5) after 5 minutes or so, scrub the internal lid with this amazing washing up scourer from LAKELAND-WASH UP WIZ at £2.99, follow by the moat. You shouldn't need to use much elbow grease as all brown bits should come off very easily
5) Using 1 bounty quality paper towel, wipe away all vinegar residual, starting with internal lid, follow by the moat. Lastly, give the fire chamber a quick wipe with this vinegar moistened towel
6) job done. Don't forget to give the scourer a quick clean with some warm water and washing up liquid so that it is ready for the next clean.
GOOD LUCK
Isn't vinegar amazing? It degreases, sanitizes, and loosens burnt on grime all in one application. Best of all, no need to rinse as it is non-toxic.
I also spray my home oven racks with vinegar and then follow by a light scrub with another amazing product from Lakeland-TUFF SCRUFF.
This combination removes the years old black baked on grime with minimal effort. Truly shocking!
I use vinegar for most of my cleaning nowadays. A lot of cleaning products give off ferocious fumes that trigger nasty migraines leaving me feeling very rough.
