We are new to the camping scene and are slowly acquiring some equipment for our summer trip. We live in France and have ordered the Outwell Montana 6 online from the UK, we have a table, foldaway chairs, airbeds etc but I am still worried about how you all keep your food chilled. Do you take fridges ? We have an electric cool box (for both car cigar plug and normal electric socket) but I don't fancy running that 24 hours a day (I imagine it would burn out fairly quickly). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Electric cool box will be fine. 3 way fridges are far more temperamental.

We have had our Electric cool box for about 5 years now and leave it even when we are camping for 2 weeks. It's still going strong.

We've taken an electric "husky" style fridge/drinks cooler (the one's with the glass door) on our last 2 trips to France, which has been great, but this year we're considering getting a coleman extreme cool box instead as we're trying to cut down on the weight we take with us.

Hi, The coolbox would be fine on 240v but dont leave it plugged into the car without the engine running or you'll need a jump start after 2-3 hours ! We use a coolbox for weekends and a table top fridge for longer trips as this also have a freezer compartment and will keep perishables longer whereas the coolbox will normally only cool to 15-18 below ambient which might not be enough if we have some good sunshine.

We use a 240v coolbox on our ehc. We keep it plugged in except when cooking so we don't blow the electrics. We also unplug it at night sometimes as it sounds quite loud when everywhere is quiet!! With the good old british weather this has been fine as the temperature isnt exactly warm at night not sure about in France though

electric coolbox should be fine left on 240v all day. Fan is pretty similar to that used on PC's and these run for thousands of hours without any probs. BTW electric coolboxes work best when only 2/3 full so cool air circulates unlike trad boxes which work best full of cold stuff.

I have a Halfords coolbox, which keeps stuff warm or cold by plugging mains lead in opposite way around. It doesn't get very cool tho'. I also have an electrolux 3 way fridge It's very good It gets very cold. I'll probably give the coolbox away, sick of it rolling about in car boot, nowhere to keep it.

Our Electrolux fridge has been our best camping buy, we found the electric cool box was not up to the heat we get regularly in the south of France. In fact it was so hot a few years ago that we had to put one of our fans behind the fridge to keep it working.

Our coolbox says you can leave it plugged in for something ridiculous like 3 months before you have to unplug it for a few hours.  Then you're set for another 3 months!  Wouldn't like to test that theory obviously!  Although 3 months solid camping does sound good......

I bought a quality coolbox purely because I didn't want to use power to chill food.

I use an icey tek 25l cube. Keeps ice for many days and means I don't need to suck juice from something else to have cold stuff.

I'm thinking of getting an Icey Tec coolbox. I have a 3 way fridge at the moment. It decided not to run on gas so I had to do the time honoured trick of emptying it and turning it upside down for a few minutes. Upon relighting it I noticed that the element inside the fridge was really warm. It had ice on it within the space of a few minutes though!!
