i have just bought my first caravan can anyone tell me if i need to get a cover for it during the winter or are they best left in the weather.

I bought a cover for our new caravan but could never be bothered fitting it.
Being out in the weather will be OK for the caravan so long as you give it a good wax and don't park it under a tree.
I keep a regular check on my van and put a dehumidifier in every know and then to make sure all is dry inside, and keep the battery charged up.
