Yes, try not to buy cheap windbreaks, if you do then buy some decent poles like these, ... you might as well have bought a decent windbreak in the 1st place.
You get what you pay for.....
Not all of us can afford to buy top spec or even higher spec gear, and the lower priced the better for budgets!
I understand that but the question you asked was:
Any tips on efficient 'installation' of windbreaks? - I remember last year it seemed to take forever to hammer the poles into the ground. (One snapped in the wind too, maybe my whacking it had weakened it?) Perhaps the ground was just very dry and there is little to do when it is like that?
I am merely going some way in trying to explain why budget windbreaks tend to be harder to hammer into the ground, sometimes break and not last very long. It can be false economy.

You can buy screw in windbreaker bases now. You screw the base into the ground using your drill or by hand then just drop the poles into the receptors. No more split poles or bruised thumbs from the hammer. We bought ours from Riversway Leisure.

Have you tried bog standard lining fabric? The outwell windbreak we have may have a 2000HH (if I remember correctly) but it still looks like lining fabric to me. I thought about making my own too with broom handles, you can get them really cheaply if you google it. Wickes sell them
