So many children! So much gear! We're going lazy-camping in a yurt, but still.... Must get more luggage space!
I'm thinking of a smallish roof box: roofbox.co.uk will sell me a 320 litre box and bars for £140. The box has a 50kg capacity, but the bars also say 50kg and the box weighs 12kg. So I only get 38kg allowance to fill it up.
What does 38kg of stuff look like? I wouldn't want to put the dense gear on the roof, so I'm thinking bedding, coats, that kind of thing, but I have no ideawhat 38kg of duvet looks like. Any thoughts?
I'm sure if you put the bulky fairly light stuff in it you'd fill it up very quickly without exceeding your weight limit. Pillows, sleeping bags etc. Failing that, stand on the bathroom scales and weight yourself then try and hold as much stuff as poss then when you hit 38kg over your own body weight you know you'll need to stop lol! you also have to take account of the cars roofrack capability ,it should say in the handbook what it is ,i suspect the roofracks limit is what the roofrack itself can take safely.
The bars made by Citroen and costing £60 can take 80kg. The cheaper bars made by "Cruz" specify 50kg, but it's not clear whether the lower spec is due to the stregth of the bars themselves or their ability to grip the roof gutters.
I do wonder how many overloaded roof boxes there are out there... some of them are nearly 500 litres, that's a lot of stuff.
38kg is quite a lot I guess. Probably all the children, just about.
