For the people in the last few posts talking about the lantern with remote - you all seem pleased with it, but can you tell me what make it is?? I don't know what I'm looking for if all I have to go on is the picture!
We have a LED UFO that we hang in the middle of our 4 person dome tent and it throws out enough light as if the room was lit off the mains. It runs on 4 AA batteries and runs for days on end. You can use AA rechargables if you want and if you run out for some reason it is so easy to find a pack of AA's at a shop anywhere in the world.
Starr. I dont have one of those lanterns pictured but I can tell you who makes them,SOMEBODY CHINESE LOOKING. Do a web search and you will get shed loads of sources. We have 2 Towsure "essential's" rechargeable lanterns they have no remotes but give us around 3 hours reasonable illumination and we recharge off EHU during day. They are available from Towsure, are about 15 quid each and are made by,,,,,, guess who!!

I don't necessarily want a bulky lantern (the less bulky the better!) - I just want something to light up our tent for an hour or two each night, I've never used anything but a torch so I didn't really know what was out there and was looking for suggestions from people who have something they would recommend.
Does this light really give enough light to read by? Cos it's crazily cheap compared to the lanterns people have suggested and I don't mind it using batteries if it goes for so long before they need recharging.
Some of them have more LED's but the one we have is just 24 LED's and it is really bright. I would really recommend giving one a try.
I went looking for a lamp at our local Go Outdoors and discovered they all seemed to be built to look like gas lanterns. I think it must be a lack of imagination by the manufacturers or something. Anyway got bored of looking in the shops so looked on eBay and found these UFO's. The one we have is very similar to that one but you could always go for the one with 48 LED's but to be honest I think you will find that to bright like having your car headlamp on full beam in the tent! Best ever camping purchase for us, someone thinking outside the box as they say.
Sounds good! I've got my eye on a couple on Ebay, can't be bad for less than a fiver, especially considering how much the usual camping lanterns seem to cost.
You can certainly read by the light of a UFO light - albeit it's a bit blue and you need to hold it just in front of your face ...
It's more of a "not bumping into things" kind of light - certainly a very effective use of a few watts of battery power ...

I actually gave up reading printed stuff some time ago, but I did a quick Google and it seems that small, highly focussed lamps are very popular for reading these days ..
