We were told that it was somthing to do with the friction plates - we can't remember exactly what was said as our developed it about 4yrs ago.
We towed with it for 3 trips whilst like this. When we took it to a dealer to have it serviced and mentioned it they told us that and advised fitting a new one so we did - though afterwards did wonder if they just wanted us to buy and fit a new one.
It was only very noticeable when we were going slowley or slowly round corners and it would really creak and groan. It was an Alko stabiliser.
Hopefully someone will come along soon who is more expert than me and put your mind at rest.
Should just add that I often have vans passing me going through here that creak a lot and are towing fine.
They do creak sometimes, generally means you need to clean your towball, it should be paint and rust free. If not it can contaminate the Alko pads, so clean them too.
Hi, been using mine for a year now, no groans, I clean the tow-ball and the pads before every use with brake cleaner spray, so I would try that first and if that does not help change the pads.
Get this every now and again!! First time it happened s**t myself!! On advice cleaned towball and friction plates using dry abhrasive pad. Seems to cure it!!
I am now even more convinced that, not knowing anything about them at that point in our camping history, we were conned into an expensive replacement that wasn't needed. We never did return to that dealer after that.
