I've just bought a set of two Binatone walkie Talkies complete with rechargable batteries and charger ( a bit like the one we have for our phones at home) from Argos for £19.99. They are BRILLIANT! the kids have been practising with them and they can walk around the block with them and the signal and reception is superb. There is no "hissing "sound and they can select (the least irritating) ring tone.
We are going to take them with us when we go on our jollies in Anglesey on Sunday so they can have a little bit more independence when they walk to the shop/showers etc or when they play in the little wooded area on the site.

we use for the kids when holidaying in france or camping, lets them get a liitle bit more independent and play with the other kids, whilst giving us a bit of re-assurance that we can check in with them to see where they are.
