Went into Poundstretcher (Instore) today and they are selling Motorola F3 mobile phones with a virgin Pay as you go SIM card. The phones are 'unlocked' so will take any SIM (except '3' network ones).

Whilst not a brilliant phone I recon it's ideal for taking camping/caravanning or as an emergency phone to keep in the car in case of breakdown.

At the price it wouldn't matter if it got lost, stolen or dropped in a puddle!

Sounds good to me, will have to have a look. As you say leave in car/caravan in case of emergencies.

Do you know whether they have a time limitation on them if you don't use the credit? I know some suppliers have around 6 months limit on not using them. Don't wanna get one then find that it won't work when i really need it!

All SIMs have an expiry date by which they have to be registered and first top up made. If you don't register it then it will expire by said date.

However, some (Not all) SIM's need to be topped up by £x per month to remain active. Whether Virgin SIMs are like this or not I don't know.

My Tesco Value SIM doesn't need a regular top up. Put £10 on it and the £10 is still there six months later (Assuming I don't use it!)

Cheers daveyhairybear - will check it out.  I suppose for £6.99 (and a fiver credit) its worth a gamble on it remaining active!

Virgin mobile does not require a regular (monthly) top up. My sons have virgin mobiles and they get topped uponce or twice a year.

They sound like a great idea.  Just use your common sense, keep them charged up, even if they are mainly switched off, just check the battery every so often.
As for keeping them active - it doesn't take much to use them once every so many months (I think that it's six with Virgin) just to keep them active.
