Hello,

We've just taken delivery of our double height Coleman Queen size air bed and we're now wondering about a better pump for pumping it up.

We currently have a 4 x D cell pump which is great a shifting large quantities of air at low pressure but as soon as its starting to back pressure its no good. The valve arrangement on the new bed doesn't make it easy to blow up the last bit manually, so we're wondering what other people use.

Do the 12v pumps have any more oomph or do I need a car trye type to actually get a bit of pressure in the bed (only set to very low pressure obviously).

Thanks, Rob

We use the Fag lighter one to blow up our bed. What the valve like on your new bed is it the little old style on or the big bottle type cap?

the car type make a lot of noise and take forever to blow up an air bed. You also have to watch the pressure as left unattended (you will get fed up watching it and find something else to do) they will burst your bed quite easily as they are high pressure/low volume.

The old bed had a flap arrangment inside the valve opening so that if a pump nozzle was inserted, it opened the flap and allowed air in or out as required. Also very useful for blowing up the last bit by mouth - self sealing against the pressure.

The new bed has a large opening (approx 20mm). It has a bit you need to pull out to open the airway and push back in to close it off again. Not very easy to do with your mouth. And it's not really long enough to squeeze  shut sideways.
