Have you looked in T J Hughes recently? I bought a waterproof padded winter coat with hood that folds into collar by Regatta from there for £19.00 a couple of weeks ago and love it cause it's wind proof as well.
Have you thought about buying a lightweight waterproof jacket that you can use all year round, and is small and light to pack/carry if necessary - and then just layering up underneath with a thick fleece when its cold?

Aldi is a new one for me... Personally I have made a terrible experience with a jacket I bought from Primark for £15. It had all sorts of fancy words describing the material. First time I tested it was on the first day of the Glastonbury festival where I got drenched to the bone. I can positively say that that jacket caused about 30% of my misery!!
Now I know that it is worth investing a bit more money in a waterproof jacket that really does what it says.
Regatta and Mountainlife (from Mountain Warehouse) are very good value for money. Just bought some stuff from MW today and it is really good.
I agree with Merry - use 2 to 3 layers with a waterprooof "shell" that way you can mix and match depending on the season and keep the waterproof shell fairly lighweight
