Many French sites do not allow Charcoal BBQs, especially those in wooded areas and definitely if further south in drier parts. This is why we splashed out and bought the Weber gas BBQ. You can often find out which ones allow them and which don't by reading the small print on their booking forms, or in their brochures. Another source of information is in the Alan Rogers guides.
If you are thinking of BBQing in France I'd play it safe and go for the gas or electric option.

We have a Cadac Safari Chef,
Though we use it a lot, it was a dissapointment. The wok is useless as it does not get hot enough to cook rice. Even light wind will stop anything cooking. I had to make a wind shield to go round the burner. Cheap thin steel pressings with razor sharp edges. Stove enamel that chips off into the food when hot. Wobbly legs & bits of plastic that fall off... I didn't think it was value for money & when it breaks it will be replaced with a Camping Gaz unit.
