We are new to camping and are looking for a fridge to take with us. We are planning to go to the South of France and I see that most portable fridges only cool to 20 degrees below ambient. Any advice would be most welcome.
Have a look at the Waeco CAB40 (grey) that goes to 30 below, the CAB40B (blue) like you mention goes to 20 below, I looked at these coolers and although 3 way, ended up with a Waeco CF25 goes to -18 C whatever the ambient temp is, of course I will set it to around +3 C, but I did get lucky and got one brand new for the same price as a CAB40, also I felt the CAB40 was cumbersome, and the dimunitive size of the CF25 will be better for lugging around, I am going to Southern France also, and with a bit of luck will be able to hire a fridge on site, most do, and the CF25 will not get as much use. the CF25 only runs of 12/24Volt or Mains, and is part of the CoolFreeze range, they use mini (almost silent) compressors like a real fridge, but designed for mobile use, the CAB40 type are of the Absorbtio design, totaly silent, but obviously not as good, the rub is the RRP for the CF25 is £399!!!.
We have a waeco 3 way 40ltr and on hot days in the summer in the hot tent it was crap! Great any other time but it can get to over 40'C on very very hot days in your tent. (and it's huge too, fills up your car boot) So we bought a waeco coolfreeze 25 Compressor Cooler, Refrigeration and Cooling, its fantastic... Not cheap but it's the nuts. We also bought the special thermal cover for it too.
I agree the "Thermal Cover" is great as it adds another -2 DegC to the spec, I have done a test and and got -20Deg C overkill, but nice to know, you can deep freeze stuff if you wish, the Thermal cover also gives the unit some added protection, I got lucky with my CF25 at £150, case of right place, right time, I got the cover from an Ebayer who specialises in Waeco, along with the mains adapter, which interestingly kicks out 24Volts and not the usual 12Volts, which is fine for the Waeco as it takes both, but is a good reason to buy the Waeco adapter and not the Campingaz/Coleman adapter as they would not be able to cope with the current drain from the Waeco, I have to hand it to Waeco the CF25 is a truely pro bit of kit, I notice in thier leaflet that the absorbtion type coolers are not shown as for use in Southern France, which kinda confirms your observations.
Hi Francais i agree with what you posted and i also bought the Waeco mains adapter. The unit does work on 24v as you say i guess thats for use in lorries etc or units that run 24v. I got mine from a company called Arleigh in warwickshire and it was about half the normal price. The waeco coolfreeze 25 uses very little power maybe about half an Amp hour at 15% running time
Only 35 watts
average running time
The WAECO CoolFreeze CF-25 – Compressor Cooler Fridge / Freezer has an operating temperature range of +10oC to -18oC. At 20oC outside ambient temperature the powerful AC compressor will run for about 15% of the time
Specifications Max Power Consumption 35W At 20oC Apx 5.25W

Firstly sorry to Julie73 for me going slightly of topic, but I noticed in Delta9's gallery a 12volt unit, what I am looking for is a leusuire battery to keep my Waeco going in the absense of EHU, maybe for just a couple of days at most, for my overnight stops, hopefully main site will always have EHU, I know I could use the car battery but would like to avoid that if possible, even though the Waeco can sense battery voltage, to save draining the cars battery. I am just looking for the best available type of leuisure battery, about time they invented portable hydrogen fueled generators me thinks.
Same here Julie so sorry too for side tracking lol.
Just to finish Francais you can use a small leisure battery (85Ah or less) or a 12v powerpack (40Ah or less) just for short breaks with that Coolfreeze 25, i have done it myself but i do top up the battery with a small solar briefcase from maplins if it's going to be longer than a few days. Waeco says those coolfreeze is ideally suited for solar operation. That 12v control box in my gallery i made to use with a leisure battery when camping without EHU, everything plugs into it via cigarette sockets. I never use EHU as there is no need for me as everything runs from 12v or gas (heater) or petrol (coleman duel fuel cooker)

Thanks for the battery info, I need to just do my home work, before I get small 40Ah battery, as some are better than others, due to differing technology used, also Julie73 if you decide to go for a Waeco, there is a firm on Ebay, that seems to specialise in them, and I did notice that they had a couple of "B" grade CF25 models going for almost half list price last time I looked, if you need the contact, let me know and I will dig out my invoice.
i was looking at a cf 25 my local camping shop is selling them at 170 pounds not bad as a 3 way fridge is 150 pounds to 160 and a 3 way fridge are not as good we have 1 and keep getting prob s with it then got turn it upside down they are sh*t going to get a cf25 its like a norm fridge at home will cool to -18 now thats better then 3 way any day
Just remember guys that the temp in your tent in peak summer can go to over 40'C and then that 30'C below ambient temperature is useles. Your milk eggs, ham, butter etc need to be below +5'C.. This happend to us on one hot summer camp and i could not get the waeco 40ltr 3way below 10'C in our tent no matter what i did. I got fed up with warm beer and the food i could not trust anymore being safe, so we had to bite the bullet and buy the coolfreeze cf25.(-18'C in any ambient temp) We've never looked back. The 3 way is a super cooler as long as the ambient temperature is on your side..
