Cant live without my telly. Have 2 sky recievers and I was hoping to take one when I go away in my conway but all the caravan systems are quite expensive. Can anyone tell me can I use an ordinary satellite dish, how to hook it up or is there a website I can go to to help. After a couple of g & t's I cant focus on the print in books but I could watch the telly.
Are you wanting to sue on EHU/240v only? If you have a 12v TV you can buy 12v "Freesat" satellite receivers but I don't know of a 12v for Sky.
Assuming you are on mains power then you can use your spare receiver for the "free to air" channels, most of the digital TV ones but not all. your Sky card is registered to a specific box so if you want all the channels you watch at home then you will need to call Sky before every trip and move account over, and back again on your return, they will probably only want to do this a few times. Other than that you would have to pay the extra each month for a multiroom subscription to cover the second box.
I use my Sky box for the free channels when the reception for digital TV is poor. Has a spare Sky dish from when we upgraded to HD at home and bought a tripod on eBay. Also got a satfinder but never other to use it, use the on-screen display on the system set-up screen of the Sky box.
If you do a search through previous postings you will find a lot more infor on what you can buy and how to set up.
You don't have to buy equipment marketed as for caravans but at least some thougt has gone into things like weight etc. The link provided by Jusy is a goldmine of information. As to buying what you need have a look here which will give a guide to prices http://www.satellitesuperstore.com/caravan-satellite.htm I find setting up a satellite system can be quite frustrating so I need all the help I can get!
Getting your satellite tv picture is made made easy if you use a none Sky box, unless you realy need those Sky subscription channels, then you have no choice to but use a Sky box, I use a tiny none Sky sat receiver made by COMAG model SL65/12 it is the size of a VHS tape, and the 12 stands for it being able to work of 12volts as well as the mains, also a basic Sky mini dish mounted on a tripod will work for any make of receiver, but for best results in the UK I would go for a 50cm Solid dish, as the Sky mini-dish is of the mesh type and can loose it shape if it gets to many nocks, resulting in poor signal collection,
Many thanks for all the information, I think I will get something sorted now as I have multiroom so can take the 2nd box with me. I would use this site even if I didn't have a trailer tent as you are all so helpful.
