Hi hope someone can advise please - I have a new never used 25 mtr cable for a van is it OK to usse in a tent it does not have an ordinay three pin socket it has the plug to plug into a van. Can I use it in a tent if I just put an orkinary socket on it. Or do I need to buy the whole thing again for a tent.
Hi,
not an expert on this but I believe hook up cables for vans don't have circuit breakers fitted, these are part of the vans electrics.
Tent hookups should always have breaker and overload trips fitted.
mojo is correct ,check the power supply is protected,if so u can plug in and be ok,if not u need some safeguard, but be sensible n dont put kettle n iron n other things on together
------------- the mighty rams!will return someday !!!!dont know when tho !
Just realised I should have posted this in the equipment section - I'll larn
Thanks Andy and Mojo I was worried about not having a circuit breaker and wondered if I could buy one to add on, I would not need to plug in more than a small fan heater if it gets too cold but I don't think it will because my first trip this year will not be till easter when of course it is going to be beautifull!!!!!!!!!!
Your extention will not be fine as it has no protection on it.
At a push you could buy a plug in RCB (the sort you use when using electrical appliances outside, lawnmowers etc)
This would trip if an earth fault happened, but would not control an overload fault as there is no fuse in a 16amp blue type plug, you would be relying on the sites circuit breaker should overload occur.
Personally I would use a plugin RCB (as above) and plug a 2 or 4 way extention into this, that way the 13 amp fuse in the plug would cover overload protection.
But if you want to be totaly correct you should buy a new purpuse designed and made unit usualy about £40 - £50 from camping shops.

What you have is just an extention, hang onto it as even though you need to get a proper protected EHU that no doubt will come with around 20m of cable the occasion may arise were you are pitched say 40m away from the EHU point, and this is when you will be glad of the extention. as it will interface with your protected EHU no problem. and in theory will allow you upto 45m distance from the EHU point.
