hi i have an nr awning that came with aluminium poles. Now we have had problems with these mainly due to weather conditions. But i am now in a quandry, do i spend another 159.00 and buy the fibreglass poles for the awning or buy a new awning? Although please bear in mind when giving me your wonderful wisdom on this subject. That i have an Avondale and i believe or have not been able to find another awning that will fit this van because its height is 220cm which is small. will fibre glass poles be stronger ie when clamped together will hold in place? Help please?

We have an Nr awning 18 foot with aluminum poles and hate them, we also have an Isabella combi with fibreglass and they are great, and use a storm strap every time we put either awning up. Personally I would spend the money, especially if I wasn't planning on changing the van.

Hi, The metal poles although much heavier, do hold the shape of the awning better especially in windy weather as they will not bend. But overall the fibre IXL poles are easier to carry and are much more popular than the metal ones. I would suggest looking for a set of lightweight poles rather than a new awning.

Thank you jasper15 and pinkfloyd for your answers. However i am now slightly confused as i assume from your answer pinkfloyd that fibreglass poles are not as good at holding the shape of the awning is this correct? Thanking you both again

I would use steel poles as even the fibreglass ones can and do break i have the proof in my garage from my daughters awning. She bought the caravan and awning as one recently but didnt see the awning errected apart from photos and we now know why. I am now going to sort through all my steel poles and put together a set for her awning. They may weigh a lot more but they dont bend out of shape or break

Hi Jennycat
I have used both types of poles in the past and definately prefer the fibreglass ones, I would suggest going for them, they hold the shape of the awning exactly the same as steel ones, my awning takes 5 poles to form the roof with a length of apx 4m each, I use a awning strap too and it has been out in some serious winds without any problems, in fact the "flex" in them probably helps, not saying they wouldn't break but then my sister has had steel poles and  had them bend! so theres good and bad with both types!

Steve
