im new to all this camping malarky and this year will be our first time,so were in the process of buy all the gear and are abit confused about sleeping bag terminology.
how do you know how warm they are and whats all this about seasons?
ive seen the 200g-500g lables, but what is best for us who dont like being cold???
Sleeping bags are perhaps the most important thing you will buy after the tent. Believe-you-me, it is not fun being cold at night. So you want a proper sleeping bag (not one that you can give to visitors who are staying the night in your house).
The "seasons" thing is a rough indicator of when it can be used through the year (1-season is for summer only, 4-season all year round). Perhaps of more use is a system that tells you what the comfortable temperature range your sleeping bag can be used in and the lowest temperature it can be used in; my Coleman bags that I bought from Go-Outdoors have this, but I know that others do also.
Also, don't forget that the performance of your bag can be boosted by an internal liner (by 1 degree with a cotton liner, upto 5 degrees by using a silk, more with fleece liners) or an external bag that you slip over yours (5+ degrees). Have a word with your local, decent camping shop.
I know it seems like there is only one season in the UK (winter! ) but, once upon a time, there used to be spring; summer; autumn and winter...
When a sleeping bag is a two season, it means it is only meant for use in the milder seasons (i.e. spring and summer) and you will most probably freeze to death if you try using it all-year round!
We have the Vango Astral 350 and 350 XL bags, which I guess are 2/3 season bags (suitable for all but the depths of winter). That said, we also use a fleecy liner with them when it is especially nippy.
