Wouldn't it be a good idea if your EHU had a meter on it which indicated the total current being used? If you find one like this let me know.

i was in lidl today and they had some device which measured the energy consumpion of a particular appliance for less than a tenner. why you would want to know this i don't know you get charged per day rather than unit of electricity used. you can however calculate all that info from the rating plate on the appliance and saving yourself a tenner. someone will post a formula hopefully.

wattage divided by voltage = current (in amps)

ie 3000 watts divided by 230 (volts) = 13 amps

hope this helps

You can get plug in thingies that will measure volts, amps, watts, KWhr consumed. Maplins had them for sale for £15, or Lidl do them for £10 now and again.

They plug into a 13A socket, so are not that convienient to use with a EHU. It would add quite a bit to the cost to incorporate one into a EHU.

Very useful devices, for instance mine tells me that my mains is currently at 239v, which is very close to the specified 240V.

Aha!, I think you have all missed my point a bit. I know the formula for watts amps and volts off by heart and I have posted it here enough for others if they needed it, and I have a maplins catalogue. But that is not where I was coming from.

I have a three outlet EHU. I can if I wanted to add up the total wattage on all the items plugged in, I could then quite easily do the math. I could by a "plug in thingy", but in reality I would need up to three and then add them all up. No, that's not what I want.

I think what would be a useful gadget on the EHU itself is a bright red Digital readout of the current being consumed at that moment and displaying constantly. Then knowing the site limit I can see at a glance exactly what I am using across all three sockets and any extension block. It would show instantly if I have any spare capacity to add something. I could make sure that I never exceed the limit, and not as a previous tongue in cheek post said wait until the lights go out! LOL!

It occured to me only that there is a huge number of posts on here about what you can or cannot use and what combination, I also thought that for the non technically minded or math orientated it would be very useful, and could save a few blushes not to say inconvenience.
