I'm looking for some help on purchasing a fridge. At the moment we have one of those portable mini fridges which cost about £20 and is no use for anything! In fact last weekend the things in our normal coolbag with 3 icepacks stayed colder after 2 days and the things in the fridge started to heat up!
Anyway, I'm wondering whether this fridge is any good for camping or would it have too much nast gas escaping in our sig tent. Any good fridges around if this is no good? It doesn't need to be big as we only go camping for a max of 4 nights at a time and there are only 3 of us. Oh, and we always have an EHU.
Not exactly sure what would be best but here is a link to a site that has fridges/freezers specifically for camping use. Might give you some idea of what's available.
Most electric cool boxes only cool to around 18-20 degrees below ambient temperature so if the temperature is 25 degrees outside you are still going to have warm food and beer.
3 way fridges (Waeco Mobicool/Combicool etc) usually cool between 25 and 30 degrees below ambient depending on the model.
We have a 30 degree below Mobicool and it's great, it's really nice to have cold food and beer - BUT they aren't cheap and they take up a lot of boot space so you need to have space to take one.
For short trips if you are close to shops I might be tempted to go for a really good non powered coldbox and icepacks.
we have bought the Waeco Coolfun 40 purely as a freezer whilst we tour Scotland in a fortnight and being away from Supermarkets for a week at a time - we got it from World of Camping earlier this year for £150, Towsure stock them & do a price match. It is heavy before you stock it so be wary if you have a bad back
My OH has just kind of made the decision for me, he just bought 2 digital photo frames which has digital TV feature on it - one for camping and one for the garage (dunno why he can't just use the same one for both lol!) which means my budget is now slashed so its gonna have to be a powerful cool box! I actually think this is probably our best option anyway as we only do about 5 days camping maz in a row.
Have looked at the minicooler link...on the tropicool TC21 what does it mean 12/24/240v...12v = car EHU = ? Would it work in England and France.Sorry not good with electrics!
Hi, I too am looking to buy 'proper' fridge for longer camping trip and have read all the advice here - very useful. Have been looking at the waeco range and just wondering what this meant...
I have just put an ad in the for sale section for our Sibir RC1100. It runs off mains, 12v or gas. It is totally silent in operation (downside is it is a bit bulkier than non-absorption models). We haven't made much use of it so it it is in good condition. I have advertised it at £70.
Have been looking at the waeco range and just wondering what this meant...
<TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD>Average running time:</TD><TD>35% at +20°C ambient temperature</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Have read it on a few descriptions.

It's the amount of time the fridge needs to be 'on' (actively cooling) to maintain the temperature you set.
The lower the figure, the more efficient the unit is. The temperature is there because it obviously has to work harder to keep stuff cool when it's warmer outside.
Hope that helps,
Andy.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
