I am looking to camp in July but the site I want has no EHU left, the only reason I wanted it was for playinga DVD at night for the young lad. I have seen some cig lighter chargers at Maplin which i could use in the day whilst travelling about and then it would be ready for night....what do you think? Anyone go non EHU regular? how do you power anything?

To be honest , if it can't be charged by car and have a long battery life, it don't go!! Ipod or equivilant is a great idea , providing you are apt enough to convert the videos to the correct formats. I use my Nokia E71 for internet , and the children have their ipods and Nintendo ds. They tend not to use them much as they are usually tired out after a full day at it . Next time I'm going away , I'm going to take a guide to the night sky and teach my kids about the stars . It is surprising how easy it is to live without an EHU , just involves a bit of planning and adjustments .
I've never tent camped with EHU. Power - gas, batteries, don't forget solar. I have a small netbook that I might be tempted to take on longer trips one day, but I still wouldn't bother to get EHU, just charge the battery up fully (+ maybe consider a spare) before you go. For lighting we use a solar-powered Sun Jar, leave it outside all day, then it comes on in the evening, fantastic, and I've seen solar chargers for MP3 players, mobiles, might even do my netbook and your laptop player (don't know how good they are though).

3 in 1 power pack, one of those things with jump leads attached to them, a light and a cig lighter type socket.Fully charged it will give around 20hrs use you can recharge when driving via car socket, and one of those inverters that lidle/aldie sell for around 14.99 will also give you a three pin plug mains power. I use this method for my laptop, tv and dvd when off ehu

What about reading to him instead? Not sure the age of your DS - but last weekend on the campsite DH started reading an Alex Rider book to our two... he's up there reading the next chapter now LOL!
Son (8) said he liked daddy reading to him as if he shut his eyes and imagined it, it was like watching a film. He said it was the same if he read it himself, but quicker if daddy read it as he didn't understand all the words. Quality time together - just what camping is about, and I think DH is enjoying the story as well!
Son read the first two himself, but having got a box of 6 for Xmas I reckon DH will now be busy for quite a few weeks...
Our kids alway's have sbooks to take. Daddy will sit and read a few chapters of something and everyone falls asleep Our 10yr old will literally finish a big book like 'Brisinger' within a weekend camping. Even on train journey's we don't take anything other than books
Our 5 year old listened to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on CD when it rained, which was just the last night. The rest of the time he was outdoors running around until bedtime
For most people, warm clothes should be plenty as a backup for July. Temperatures don't plummet during a clear night like they do in early spring and late autumn.
OH says you can buy an invertor that converts dc to ac...... mind you... camping is all about types of entertainment; he would leave me at home if I suggested taking mamma mia, bridget jones etc...
