I have recenty been debating our coolong options and partner says no to gas and i say no to EHU so i am concidering what the best cooling boxes are out there and wether they really do live up to their claims of keeping ice frozen for 5 days! Any one have any words of wisdom for me?

I use a cheap 25L cool box with ice packs(£8.99 for poundstretcher!!). As long as you freeze everything you can , like sausages , bacon , fresh fruit juice , milk etc etc it will stay frozen solid for about 3 days! Then you will simply need to put in fresh ice packs every day whilst needed. A good tip I got from someone here is to use a cheap supermarket cool bag /carrier with the handles cut off. If you use this inside your cool box and role it down as your supplys are used up , you will not be cooling dead space iyswim. I swear by my cool box and if you keep it in the shade outside your tent then it will work fine. Keep it in your tent on a sunny day and you will have problems! Another good tip is to use the cool carrier idea to keep your salad stuff away from the ice but still cold. Cucumber turns to mush if it is sat against an ice pack..yuk!

Not sure about the 5 day claims tbh I first purchased a huge coleman 48l coolbox which claimed the same...didnt work very well and because it took up half the boot I sold it and got the cheapy...never looked back!

Hi.

We have an excellent three way fridge but its big and heavy and I don't usually want to be stuck either using ehu or lugging the gas bottle for shorter trips so am a big fan of cool boxes.

Over the years we've had various coolboxes and they do vary enormously in quality and ability to keep things cold, so its worth shopping around. Its also worth making sure you get one that's a reasonable match to your needs as the bigger they are, the harder they are to keep cold and also its hard to keep things cold if there's too much dead air or space inside the box.

I have just been away for a week and really tested my new Icey Tek cool box over seven days of daily temperatures in the high twenties: it was brilliant!

I had chosen an Icey Tek because it was the only high performance cool box that came in a size as small as 25 litres and I didn't want anything bigger. I prepped it with a £1 bag of supermarket ice cubes the night before I left home, added the milk, cheese, food, wine etc plus a couple of litre bottles of frozen water on the morning as we left. I put a layer of bubble wrap over the top of the food to hold all the cold air down and around it, if you see what I mean. While we were away the only two other things I did, other than adding more food and drink supplies, was to add one more bag of supermarket ice midweek and to put a soaking wet towel on top of the box each day. Everything stayed really, really cold and when we arrived back home a week later there was still some solid ice inside the original frozen water bottles.

Can't ask for more than that! And I can't emphasise enough how very hot and sunny it was every day while we were away. Test passed with more than flying colours if you ask me. 17

I'm pleased to read a review of the Icey Tec that confirms the claims that the manufacturer makes about it. They certainly appear to be a very effective product. However, they are also very expensive.

If you don't want to spend that much then consider an IGLOO Max Cold 70 Roller. I got one from COSTCO a couple of years back for about £33. They claim 5 days and it does make good on that claim.

Yes, they are. No getting away from that.  I dithered over buying an Icey Tek for about nine months but then took the plunge as none of the other makes, like Igloo for instance, did a small enough size for what I wanted/needed. So no one is more pleased than me at how well it just performed in the glorious weather we just enjoyed in Cornwall. Phew!
