I've had this IKEA kettle for a few years now for use when camping. (It was much cheaper than a camping kettle!). Over the years I've never really cleaned it - just rinsed it before use. It's been in the garage all year (spout shut) and I want to clean it before it moves into my new (to me) motorhome for use when not on hookup. How do I clean the inside? These are my ideas:
1. Put milton inside it (although I've read that milton is not that good for metal when sterilising water systems)
2. Just fill and rinse it with washing up liquid
3. Fill it with water and bring to the boil a few times
Why do you want to clean the inside, is there a particular dirt in there, lime scale perhaps?
Depending on what lies within, you'll need to treat accordingly.
If it's just because the kettle has sat unused for a year and is otherwise clean, I'd just fill it and boil it a few times before serous use.
I can't actually see inside, the only way to add water etc is through the spout. I'm just a bit weary as spiders have obviously been on the outside, and I don't think they could get in, but you never know! There is obviously a way for steam to get out, so maybe small spiders could get in???
My mother in law used to clean things like kettles, metal teapots etc by putting water and bio washing powder (or liquid) in and boiling on cooker ring for about 15 minutes. Teapots especially came up lovely. All the brown inside just lifted off. Rinse well of course, then boil with clean water. White vinegar and water used in same way is a good cleaner.
Fill the kettle with a solution of water with lemon juice and put that to the boil. It should clear the kettle of scale and other nasties. Then, I should use a solution of soda and water to purify and to top it all I would use Steradent, as suggested.
Try some descaler if you think that is the problem and thouroughly rinse it afterwards, otherwise just almost fill it and boil it out a couple of times with ordinary water. Anything in there should be killed with the first boiling and then the second boiling will make sure!
That's all that I would do is boil it a couple of times, even dirt will become sterile but if the kettle was that cheap and it really bothers you then why not just buy another lol
